How far is Chandigarh from Delhi, and which road should you take?
Chandigarh is about 250 km from Delhi on NH-44, a well-maintained 6-lane highway with clean rest stops, and the cab ride takes 4–5 hours. NH-44 is the only practical route; the Saharanpur road is longer and we rarely recommend it.
| Route | Via | Distance | Travel time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Route 1 (recommended) | NH-44 → Panipat → Karnal → Ambala → Zirakpur → Chandigarh | ~250 km | 4 hr 30 min | Fastest, smooth 6-lane highway |
| Route 2 (via Saharanpur) | NH-58 → Saharanpur → Yamunanagar → Panchkula → Chandigarh | ~285 km | 6 hr | Alternate route, less recommended |
The highway is lined with family restaurants such as Haveli, and the Murthal dhabas — Pehalwan, Mannat and Amrik Sukhdev — have made a paratha breakfast part of every Delhi–Chandigarh drive. Chandigarh is also India's first planned city, Le Corbusier's architectural masterpiece, and the natural pivot for Shimla and Manali trips.
What are the best places to visit in Chandigarh?
Rock Garden
Nek Chand began this 40-acre sculpture park in 1957, building it entirely from industrial and urban waste. More than 5,000 sculptures, waterfalls, caves and pavilions are made from broken bangles, ceramic tiles, electrical fittings and bottles.
Sukhna Lake
A 3-km man-made lake at the foot of the Shivaliks, popular for boating, jogging and evening walks. The promenade is busy with families and cyclists from sunrise to late evening — and the sunrise itself is worth getting up for.
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden
Often called Asia's largest rose garden, it covers 30 acres with 1,600+ varieties and some 50,000 rose bushes. It is at its best from February to April, when the annual Rose Festival is held.
Capitol Complex
Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex — the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Assembly, the Open Hand Monument and the Tower of Shadows — became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. Guided tours are available; book in advance.
Sector 17
The city's pedestrian-friendly heart, with shopping plazas, fountains, eateries and showrooms of major Indian and international brands. Come in the evening for shopping and street food.
Elante Mall
A huge mall with 200+ retail stores, restaurants, a multiplex and entertainment zones — a cool escape during the summer months.
Pinjore Garden (Yadavindra Garden)
About 22 km from Chandigarh, this 17th-century Mughal-style garden has seven terraces, fountains and a wildlife zoo, and makes an easy half-day picnic.
Chandi Mandir, Mansa Devi and Nada Sahib
On the Panchkula side are Chandi Mandir, the temple that gave the city its name, the Mansa Devi Shakti Peetha and Nada Sahib Gurudwara.
When is the best time to visit Chandigarh?
The pleasant season runs from September to April, with temperatures of about 10–30°C. Summer from May to July can cross 42°C, so an AC cab is essential. In December and January, NH-44 can be foggy in the early morning, so plan daytime travel. Events worth catching:
- Rose Festival (February): a 3-day flower festival at the Rose Garden.
- Baisakhi (April): vibrant Punjabi New Year celebrations across the city.
- Mango Mela (June): 50+ varieties of mango at Pinjore Garden.
- Chandigarh Carnival (November): four days of food, music and folk performances.
Tips for planning your Chandigarh trip
- Budget 30 minutes for Murthal. A paratha breakfast at Amrik Sukhdev, Pehalwan or Mannat Haveli is part of the journey.
- Avoid fog-bound mornings in December and January — a daytime departure is safer and barely slower.
- Book the Capitol Complex tour ahead of your visit, since guided tours need advance booking.
- See Sukhna Lake at sunrise and save the Rock Garden and Sector 17 for later in the day.
- Book early for peak dates. Weekends and festivals fill up, so reserve 1–2 weeks ahead.
- Going further north? Chandigarh is a good overnight break on the way to the hills or to Amritsar.
