How far is Dehradun from Delhi, and which route is fastest?
Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand and the gateway to Mussoorie, is about 250 km from Delhi — a 5–6 hour cab ride. The established route follows NH-44 and NH-7. The new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway is opening in phases and, once complete, is expected to bring the drive under 3 hours. Good rest stops and dhabas line the way, and the final stretch from Haridwar runs through forest into the Doon Valley.
| Route | Via | Distance | Travel time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended | NH-44 → Sonipat → Panipat → Saharanpur → Roorkee → Haridwar → Dehradun | ~250 km | 5 hr 30 min | Standard, smoothest route |
| Via Expressway (partial) | Delhi–Dehradun Expressway (partly open) + NH-7 | ~210 km | 4 hr 30 min | Faster when fully open |
| Heritage circuit | NH-58 → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Dehradun | ~290 km | 7 hr | Combined Haridwar–Rishikesh–Dehradun trip |
Want to see the holy towns too? The heritage circuit takes in Haridwar and Rishikesh on the way up.
What are the best places to visit in Dehradun?
Robber's Cave (Guchhupani)
A natural cave with a stream running through it: you wade ankle-deep through cool water for about 600 m. It is the most popular outing for families and groups visiting Dehradun.
Sahastradhara
The "thousand-fold spring", 20 km from the city, sends sulphur water cascading over limestone formations and is believed to help with skin conditions. A cable car runs up to the hilltop.
Forest Research Institute (FRI)
One of India's oldest institutions sits in a grand Indo-Saracenic, Greco-Roman building set in 450 acres. Its museums cover Indian forests and biodiversity, and the building itself appeared in the film Student of the Year.
Mindrolling Monastery
One of the largest Tibetan monasteries in India, in Clement Town, with a towering Buddha statue, a World Peace Stupa and exquisite Tibetan art. It is peaceful and very photogenic.
Tapkeshwar Temple
An ancient cave temple of Lord Shiva where water drips from the rock onto the Shivling, a short walk from the parking. Mondays and Shivratri are especially crowded.
Rajaji National Park
Thirty km from Dehradun, the park is home to elephants, tigers, leopards and over 400 bird species. Jeep safaris run from November to June, and a visit pairs well with a stop in Haridwar.
Mussoorie day trip
The "Queen of Hills" sits at 2,000 m, 37 km up the road, with Mall Road, Gun Hill, Kempty Falls and Camel's Back Road. Most Dehradun trips include a day there.
Around the city
- Sai Darbar Mandir, a popular Sai Baba temple on Rajpur Road
- Buddha Temple in Clement Town, with striking Tibetan architecture
- The Wadia Institute's Himalayan geology museum
- Paltan Bazaar and Astley Hall for shopping
- Dakpathar Barrage and Lacchiwala picnic spot
Which events are worth timing a Dehradun trip around?
The Doon Valley is pleasant for most of the year, so local events are often the deciding factor:
- Spring Festival (March): flower exhibitions across the Doon Valley.
- Tapkeshwar Mela (Shivratri): huge crowds at the cave temple.
- Mussoorie Winter Festival (December): hill-station celebrations up the road.
- Doon heritage walks (all year): organised walks through colonial-era Dehradun.
Tips for your Delhi to Dehradun trip
- Using Dehradun as a Char Dham base? The city has Jolly Grant Airport, with flights from Delhi, and road links to all four dhams: Yamunotri (180 km), Gangotri (240 km), Kedarnath (260 km) and Badrinath (320 km). Char Dham packages start from ₹65,000.
- Catching an onward flight? Many travellers ride straight from Delhi to Jolly Grant Airport to fly on to Mumbai or Bangalore; give us your flight number when you book.
- Driving in the monsoon. July and August rain is heavy in the foothills, so allow extra time on the road.
