Delhi to Mathura distance, travel time and best route
Mathura is about 145 km from Delhi, and the Yamuna Expressway is the only sensible way to get there — smooth, fast and direct. From Central or South Delhi the cab takes the DND Flyway towards Noida, joins the expressway at Greater Noida and leaves it at the Mathura exit. Plan on 2.5 – 3 hours each way, including a short tea break.
| Route | Via | Distance | Travel time | Best for |

| Combined Braj yatra | Yamuna Expressway → Mathura → Vrindavan | ~155 km | 3 hr | Mathura + Vrindavan darshan |
Top places to visit in Mathura
1. Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi
The most important pilgrimage site in Mathura, revered as the exact birthplace of Lord Krishna. The complex includes the underground Garbha Griha — the prison cell where Krishna was born — the main temple and the adjoining Keshav Dev Temple. Security is strict: phones, cameras, bags and leather items are not allowed inside, and cloak rooms are available.
2. Dwarkadhish Temple
Mathura's main city temple, built in 1814 and dedicated to Krishna as the king of Dwarka. Its Rajasthani-style architecture is lovely year-round and especially lively during Holi, when coloured powder fills the air.
3. Vishram Ghat
The principal ghat on the Yamuna, where Krishna is said to have rested after slaying Kansa. Twenty-five ghats line the river here, and the evening Yamuna Aarti at sunset is one of the most beautiful moments of a Mathura visit.
4. Govardhan Hill and Kusum Sarovar
About 22 km from Mathura, Govardhan is the hill Krishna lifted on his little finger. Devotees walk the 21 km Govardhan Parikrama, many of them barefoot. If walking is not possible, your cab can follow the perimeter road so you can stop and pay homage at the key spots — ask for it as a half-day extension to your booking. Kusum Sarovar, a serene stepped lake, is close by.
5. Vrindavan (12 km)
Mathura's twin town is where Krishna spent his childhood, and it is home to Banke Bihari Temple, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and Nidhivan. If Vrindavan is your main stop, see our Delhi to Vrindavan taxi page for details.
6. Other Braj sites
- Kans Qila — the ruins of Kansa's fort.
- Gokul (15 km) — where Krishna spent his early years.
- Mahavan — ancient Krishna sites.
- Barsana and Nandgaon (45 km) — Radha's birthplace and Krishna's foster village, famous for Lathmar Holi.
- Mathura Museum — sculptures of the Mathura School of Art.
A simple same-day Mathura plan
A same-day round trip from Delhi that covers the Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish, Vishram Ghat and Vrindavan is comfortably doable. A typical order looks like this:
- Early pickup from your Delhi NCR address and the expressway run to Mathura (2.5 – 3 hours).
- Darshan at Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi — leave phones, bags and leather items in the cab or the cloak room.
- Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat in the old city.
- The 12 km drive to Vrindavan for Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir — half a day in each town covers the major temples.
- Back on the Yamuna Expressway to Delhi.
Want the sunset Yamuna Aarti at Vishram Ghat? Do Vrindavan first and finish the day in Mathura. Many Braj temples close for a few hours in the afternoon, so check darshan timings for your travel date and share your plan with the driver at pickup.
Best time to visit Mathura from Delhi
The best time for a Delhi to Mathura cab trip is October to March, when days stay around 10–28°C. Summers cross 45°C. Think twice about Holi week unless you want to join in — the entire town celebrates for three to four days and you will not stay colour-free.
Major festivals in Mathura
